Grand Theft Auto VI extended preview launches on Netflix and YouTube, captured entirely on PS5

Grand Theft Auto VI’s extended gameplay preview launched on Netflix yesterday, giving the world its first substantial look at Rockstar’s next open-world crime epic. The presentation is also available free on YouTube, because even Rockstar apparently understands that asking everyone to subscribe to Netflix before watching a trailer is a bit much.

The extended look arrived on 27 August 2026 and runs for almost half an hour. It follows Jason and Lucia through the sun-baked chaos of Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, showing more of the game’s missions, driving, shooting, police chases and criminal underworld than either of the earlier trailers.

Rockstar is also hosting the presentation on Netflix, where it was launched as a special extended preview. The YouTube upload is the more convenient option for most people, unless your preferred way to watch game footage involves finding it between three seasons of a crime drama.

The entire presentation was captured on PS5

The most important technical detail is easy to miss amid the neon, explosions and suspiciously clean-looking beaches: Rockstar confirms that the entire extended look was captured from in-game footage on a standard PlayStation 5.

That means the footage was not captured on a PlayStation 5 Pro, PC or an undisclosed development machine. It is a useful reference point for expectations, particularly because Rockstar has only announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions so far.

The preview shows Rockstar pushing the current console generation hard, with dense streets, detailed interiors, busy roads, varied weather and facial animation that is being asked to carry a great deal of the game’s criminal melodrama.

Jason, Lucia and a very bad idea

The story centres on Jason and Lucia, two partners whose attempt at an easy score goes wrong. Rockstar describes them as finding themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida and forced to rely on each other if they want to survive.

The extended preview expands the picture of that partnership and the world around it. Vice City returns as the familiar centre of the series’ fictional Florida, but Leonida is much larger than a single city, giving Rockstar room for quieter rural roads, smaller communities and the sort of places where a terrible plan can become an even worse one.

Release date and platforms

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official page does not currently list a PC version.

Our opinion

Launching the extended preview on Netflix is a wonderfully strange bit of platform cross-pollination. It gives the presentation the scale of a film premiere, while the free YouTube upload stops the whole thing becoming an advert for yet another streaming subscription.

The PS5 capture is the real headline for anyone watching the technical side. Rockstar is not showing a fantasy PC build or a carefully hidden next-generation machine; this is the game running on the console most people will actually use. If the final release can maintain this level of detail without turning every street corner into a loading screen, the technical achievement will be considerable.

The important caveat is that an edited preview remains an edited preview. Rockstar is showing the best version of the experience, not handing over the controller. Still, after years of waiting, this is the first time Grand Theft Auto VI feels like a game rather than a very expensive rumour. Now the wait for November feels even longer.
